Ford(-58.9%), BMW(-47.3%), Chevrolet(-39.7%)는 큰 폭으로 감소한 반면 Toyota(+184.7%), Subaru(+51.9%), Rivian(+9.6%), Cadillac(+5.7%)은 판매를 늘렸습니다.
Toyota bZ4X(+140.6%), Cadillac Optiq(+42.8%), Kia EV9(+7.0%)는 성장했지만 Chevrolet Equinox(-60.6%)와 Ford Mustang Mach-E(-48.3%)는 큰 폭으로 감소했습니다.
BMW(+16.9%)와 Lexus(+27.4%)는 성장한 반면 Jeep(-88.9%), Mercedes-Benz(-75.6%), Mazda(-68.3%), Ford(-62.8%)는 큰 폭으로 감소했습니다.
North America EV Market Review (Jan-Aug 2026)
North America's EV market declined 24.9% YoY to 954K units in Jan-Aug 2026, the weakest performance among the major regions. August volume fell 40.4% to 123K units, largely reflecting the surge in demand in August 2025 ahead of the federal tax credit expiry on 30 September 2025. From this update, BYD sales in Mexico are included, and both 2025 and 2026 figures have been restated on the same basis.
BEV sales declined 20.3% to 784K units, while PHEV sales fell 40.7% to 170K units, twice the rate of the BEV decline. By country, US volume fell 31.4% while Canada rose 23.3% and Mexico 19.4%, lifting the combined share of the two smaller markets from 12.2% to 19.8%.
Tesla further increased its weight in the BEV market. Its sales slipped 1.5% to 377K units, but its share rose from 38.9% to 48.1% as competitors declined faster. August volume fell to 45K units from 62K a year earlier, turning Tesla's cumulative growth negative. Ford (-58.9%), BMW (-47.3%), and Chevrolet (-39.7%) declined sharply, while Toyota (+184.7%), Subaru (+51.9%), Rivian (+9.6%), and Cadillac (+5.7%) grew against the market trend.
At the model level, Tesla Model Y rose 14.1% to 247K units and accounted for 31.5% of the North American BEV market. Model 3 fell 22.4% and Cybertruck 14.7%. Toyota bZ4X (+140.6%), Cadillac Optiq (+42.8%), and Kia EV9 (+7.0%) grew, while Chevrolet Equinox (-60.6%) and Ford Mustang Mach-E (-48.3%) fell sharply.
The PHEV market contracted across most brands. Toyota remained the largest PHEV brand with 30.8K units (-3.4%) and an 18.1% share, just ahead of BYD at 29.5K units (17.4%), sold in Mexico. BMW (+16.9%) and Lexus (+27.4%) grew, while Jeep (-88.9%), Mercedes-Benz (-75.6%), Mazda (-68.3%), and Ford (-62.8%) declined sharply. Jeep's share fell from 20.7% to 3.9%.
Toyota RAV4 led the model ranking with 19K units (-2.9%), followed by BMW X5 at 14K units (+7.5%). BYD Song PLUS DM-i and Qin Pro, both sold in Mexico, ranked fourth and sixth, and Lexus NX (+29.1%) and RX (+20.8%) also grew. Jeep Grand Cherokee fell 87.1% and dropped out of the top 10. Models outside the top 10 declined 61.9%, reducing their combined share from 61.6% to 39.6%.
Battery demand decreased 24.7% YoY to 70.6 GWh. Panasonic held volume flat at 29.0 GWh (+0.3%) and increased its share from 30.8% to 41.1%. All three Korean suppliers declined: LGES fell 43.1% and its share decreased from 26.6% to 20.1%, SK On fell 43.0% to a 9.4% share, and SDI fell 62.2% to a 5.6% share, taking their combined share from 50.1% to 35.1%. By cell format, pouch demand fell 44.2% while cylindrical declined only 4.7%, lifting its share from 37.3% to 47.2%.
The decline in plug-in vehicles does not indicate a contraction in electrified demand overall. Hybrid (HEV) sales rose 21.1% to 1.92 million units, lifting the hybrid share of electrified vehicles from 55.5% to 66.8%. Total electrified sales including BEV and PHEV increased 0.7% to 2.87 million units, suggesting that the credit expiry redirected buyers from plug-ins to hybrids rather than out of electrification.
Overall, North America's EV market in Jan-Aug 2026 showed simultaneous contraction and rising concentration. Tesla and Model Y gained weight in BEV even as Tesla's own volume turned lower in August, and the PHEV market saw broad-based declines. Because pre-expiry demand also carried into September 2025, the cumulative decline may widen further through September. When demand that shifted to hybrids returns to plug-in vehicles will remain a key theme for the region.
