North America EV Market Jan–Jul 2026: Plug-in Demand Weakens as Tesla and Panasonic Gain Share
North America’s EV market remained under pressure during Jan–Jul 2026, with both BEV and PHEV sales declining YoY.
The expiry of the federal tax credit on 30 September 2025 continued to weigh on plug-in demand, while the downturn increased market concentration around leading players such as Tesla and Panasonic.
BEV sales fell 16.5% YoY to 670K units, while July volume dropped 32.4% to 91K units. PHEV demand weakened even more sharply, declining 45.4% to 120K units. By country, US sales fell 28.2%, while Canada and Mexico increased 22.0% and 78.3%, respectively, highlighting diverging regional trends
Tesla further strengthened its dominance in the BEV market. Despite the overall contraction, Tesla sales increased 3.6% to 332K units, lifting its market share from 40.0% to 49.6%. Ford, BMW, and Chevrolet declined sharply, while Toyota, Subaru, Cadillac, and Rivian expanded against the market trend.
At the model level, Tesla Model Y grew 22.0% to 217K units and accounted for 32.4% of the entire North American BEV market. Model 3, by contrast, declined 22.1%. Toyota bZ4X, Cadillac Optiq, and Kia EV9 recorded growth, while Chevrolet Equinox and Ford Mustang Mach-E posted steep declines.
The PHEV market also experienced broad weakness. Toyota remained the largest brand with 24K units despite a 14.8% decline and held a 20.2% market share. BMW and Lexus were among the few brands to grow, while Jeep, Mercedes-Benz, Mazda, Ford, and Volvo recorded sharp declines. Jeep’s share fell from 22.7% to 5.4%, significantly reshaping the competitive ranking.
Battery demand declined 21.2% YoY to 60.6 GWh. Panasonic bucked the market trend, growing 6.0% to 25.5 GWh and increasing its share from 31.3% to 42.1%. In contrast, LGES, SK On, and SDI all declined, reducing the combined share of the three Korean suppliers from 50.1% to 35.8%. By cell format, pouch demand fell 41.1%, while cylindrical demand remained near the prior-year level, lifting its share to 48.7%.
However, weaker plug-in sales did not translate into a decline in electrified demand overall. HEV sales rose 21.5% to 1.66 million units, while total electrified vehicle sales increased 2.6% to 2.45 million units. This suggests that the end of the tax credit shifted demand from BEV and PHEV toward hybrids rather than away from electrification altogether.
Overall, North America’s EV market in Jan–Jul 2026 was characterized by weaker plug-in demand and rising concentration among leading players. Tesla and Model Y strengthened their positions in the vehicle market, while Panasonic expanded its lead in batteries. A key issue going forward will be whether demand that shifted toward hybrids returns to plug-in vehicles and how the region’s increasingly concentrated competitive structure evolves.
