Renault, Kia, BYD, Skoda
Europe EV Market Jan–Jul 2026: Strong BEV and PHEV Growth, Rising Chinese Presence
Europe’s EV market continued to expand strongly during Jan–Jul 2026, with both BEV and PHEV sales posting double-digit growth. BEV sales increased 33.2% YoY to 2.05 million units, while PHEV sales rose 21.2% to 915K units. Germany, the UK, France, Italy, and Spain together accounted for 1.89 million units, or 63.8% of the regional market.
Tesla led the BEV market with 183K units, up 34.1% YoY, lifting its share to 8.9%. Volkswagen declined 4.1% to 163K units and slipped to second place. Renault, Kia, BYD, and Skoda also recorded strong growth, while no single brand exceeded a 9% share, highlighting the highly diversified structure of Europe’s BEV market.
At the model level, Tesla Model Y remained the best-selling BEV with 121K units, while Skoda ELROQ surged to second place with 68K units. Tesla Model 3, Renault R5, and Citroen e-C3 also expanded, whereas Volkswagen’s ID.3, ID.4, and ID.7 underperformed the overall market.
In the PHEV segment, BYD recorded the most significant gain. Sales more than doubled from 51K to 116K units, increasing its market share from 6.8% to 12.6% and making BYD the largest PHEV brand in Europe. Audi and Jaecoo also grew rapidly, while Volvo, SEAT, and BMW declined. At the model level, BYD Yuan UP, Jaecoo J7, and Volkswagen Tiguan PHEV led the market, while the top model accounted for only 3.9% of sales, underscoring the segment’s fragmented structure.
Battery demand increased 29.7% YoY to 160.8 GWh. CATL remained the clear leader with 71.8 GWh and a 44.6% market share. LGES increased volume but lost share, while SK On and SDI also weakened. The combined share of the three Korean battery makers fell from 35.2% to 29.0%, while Chinese suppliers including BYD, SVOLT, CALB, and EVE expanded rapidly.
Chinese automakers also accelerated their expansion in Europe. Their sales reached 521K units, up 123.0% YoY, lifting market share from 10.2% to 17.6% and reaching 20.0% in July alone. Entry has been faster through PHEVs than BEVs, which remain subject to countervailing duties: Chinese brands accounted for 27.1% of Europe’s PHEV market versus 13.3% of the BEV market.
Overall, Europe’s EV market is being shaped by both strong demand growth and a changing competitive landscape. Tesla and Chinese automakers are expanding their presence in the vehicle market, while Chinese battery suppliers are also gaining share. Competition between established European and Korean players and emerging Chinese companies is therefore expected to become an increasingly important factor shaping the region’s EV and battery markets.
