반면 LeapMotor(+53.6%), NIO(+68.1%), SAIC(+246.5%)가 높은 성장률을 기록했으며 Li Auto도 0.9만 대에서 14.9만 대로 크게 늘었다.

China EV Market Jan–Jul 2026: BEV Recovery, PHEV Weakness and a Reshaping Competitive Landscape

China’s EV market showed increasingly divergent trends across powertrains during Jan–Jul 2026. BEV sales recovered to 4.42 million units, up 0.1% YoY, supported by a 9.9% increase in July to 758K units. In contrast, PHEV sales fell 22.9% to 1.94 million units. The shift from full NEV purchase-tax exemption to a 50% reduction, together with tighter electric-range requirements for PHEVs, appears to have weighed particularly heavily on entry-level plug-in hybrid demand.

The BEV market also saw a clear shift in competitive dynamics. BYD sales fell 30.4% to 572K units, reducing its market share from 18.6% to 12.9%, while Geely, Wuling and Tesla also declined. By contrast, LeapMotor, NIO and SAIC posted strong growth, and Li Auto expanded from 9K to 149K units. Their combined market share increased from 8.6% to 18.7%, highlighting the growing influence of newer and faster-growing brands.

Model rankings were reshaped by new launches. Li Auto Ideal i6 reached 136K units and ranked third, while Xiaomi YU7 moved into fourth place with 115K units. LeapMotor A10, NIO ES8 and MG-4 also entered the top 10. Meanwhile, Hongguang MINI and Xiaomi SU7 declined sharply, underscoring the accelerating product replacement cycle in China’s BEV market.

Structural change was even more pronounced in PHEVs. BYD sales dropped 55.0% from 904K to 407K units, cutting its share from 35.9% to 20.9%. Li Auto also declined sharply, while Fangchengbao grew 152.7% and ZEEKR entered the top tier. The share of “Others” rose from 19.0% to 30.9%, indicating a transition from a BYD-centered market toward a more fragmented competitive landscape. Fangchengbao Titanium 7 became the best-selling PHEV with 99K units, while several former BYD volume leaders posted steep declines.

Despite weaker vehicle sales, battery demand increased 16.7% YoY to 408.4 GWh. CATL strengthened its lead with 182.1 GWh and a 44.6% market share, while BYD declined 10.8% to 73.2 GWh. Mid-tier suppliers including REPT, LGES, Zenergy, EVE and CALB also expanded rapidly. Commercial electrification was a key driver: electric truck sales rose 17.7% to 465K units, while average pack size increased from 95 kWh in 2024 to 204 kWh, taking commercial vehicles to 107.9 GWh, or 26.4% of total battery demand.

Overall, Jan–Jul 2026 was defined less by headline market growth than by structural transition. New brands and models are gaining influence in BEVs, PHEV competition is becoming more fragmented, and CATL is consolidating its battery leadership as mid-tier suppliers and commercial electrification support demand. Product competitiveness, brand differentiation and supply-chain strength are therefore becoming increasingly important drivers of performance in China’s EV market.
