In recent years, the related mineral market has fluctuated. The price of cobalt soared to USD $94/kg in 2018 and it marked a record high trading price. The stock has been piled up since 2007, and it recorded nearly 500,000 tons of stock after 10 years. The total stock fell below 100,000 tons in 2019 and recently rebounded.

 

Such causes of this change can be found in the market growth of electric vehicles. The seemingly unrelated relationship among cobalt, nickel and electric vehicles is much closer than we think. Most of the key materials in secondary battery cathode materials, the key component of electric vehicles, consist of NCM. NCM is a shortened version of nickel, cobalt and manganese. In addition to NCM, there are various types of cathode materials used in secondary batteries. There are cathode materials such as ‘Lithium·Cobalt·Oxide(LCO)’ which is mainly used for secondary battery cathode materials for small devices such as smartphones, ‘Nickel·Cobalt·Aluminium(NCA)’ used in Panasonic’s secondary batteries for Tesla, and ‘Lithium·iron·Phosphate(LFP)’ which became a big issue when CATL of China was used in secondary batteries for Tesla. Lithium is used for these cathode materials which are all common raw materials. Cobalt is also common cathode materials except LFP. NCM and NCA, which have become the two pillars of cathode material for electric vehicles, commonly contain large amounts of nickel. Like this, these raw materials have become indispensable materials in the manufacture of secondary batteries.

 

As above, this report provides material characteristics of the major raw materials composed of cathode material for secondary batteries, key specific note for supply, and overview of demand and supply. The demand for raw materials needed in the future is calculated by combining the demand outlook for small/ESS/electric vehicles previously predicted by SNE Research. However, market volatility caused by COVID-19, which is currently a problem, are not reflected.
