Global EV Battery Installation in Jan ~ August 2021

CATL continued its lead in battery usage rankings for global electric vehicles (BEV, PHEV, HEV) sold in January-August and August 2021. LG Energy Solution took second place and SK Innovation is strengthening its annual cumulative 5th position. While threats from Chinese companies continue, the three Korean companies have achieved high growth in the market.

From January to August 2021, the total amount of battery energy for electric vehicles registered in countries around the world was 162.0GWh, nearly 2.4 times higher than the same period of the previous year. The recovery of electric vehicle sales started in the third quarter of 2020 is expected to continue until at least the end of the year.

Many Chinese companies led by CATL and BYD showed market growth. As the Chinese market continued to expand, the share of most Chinese companies increased compared to the same period last year.

On the other hand, Japanese companies, including Panasonic, recorded growth rates that fell far short of the market average, and most of them lost their market share.

While the growth rate of the three Korean companies was somewhat unsettled compared to the market average, overall, their share fell slightly. LG Energy Solution recorded 39.7GWh, a 2.5-fold increase compared to last year's same period, and ranked second in the same period the previous year. SK Innovation surged 2.4 times and ranked 5th, up to one place from the same period last year. It appears to be solidifying its 5th position, which it has occupied since the first half of last year. Samsung SDI rose 77.9% to 7.9GWh, but ranked 6th, down two places from the same period last year.

The growth of the three companies was driven by the increase in sales of models equipped with each company's batteries. In LG Energy Solution, the strong sales of Tesla Model Y (made in China), Volkswagen ID.4, and Ford Mustang Mach-E led to rapid growth. SK Innovation achieved a sharp increase thanks to increased sales of the Kia Niro EV, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Mercedes-Benz GLE PHEV. Samsung SDI showed growth thanks to increased sales of the Fiat 500 and Audi E-tron EV. However, the sharp decline in Volkswagen e-Golf sales significantly offset the overall growth.

Meanwhile, global EV battery installation in August 2021 was 25.2GWh, 2.2 times higher than the same month of the previous year. The electric vehicle battery market recovered from the impact of the COVID-19 crisis and showed a recovery trend for 14 months. While major markets such as China, the US, and Europe all showed growth, by company, many Chinese companies led the market growth with triple-digit growth. The offensive by Chinese companies such as CATL and BYD is expected to continue for the time being.
