Global Low Voltage System (LVS) Technology Trend and Market Forecast for Lithium-ion for LVS (2016~2020)

         Due to the strengthening environmental regulations such as greenhouse gas emissions reduction, energy production and consumption are gaining increasing attention. Electric vehicles (EVs), which have been driven by regulatory policies on air pollution, are more eco-friendly than the traditional internal combustion engines with uncompromised driving performance. Not surprisingly, the EV market has been growing continuously in recent years. The EV market, created as GM and Toyota launched the EV1 in 1996 and Prius in 1997, respectively, has achieved substantial growth. Today, various EV models including Tesla's Model S, Nissan's Leaf, and GM’s Volt are competing on the market and approximately 2.6 million vehicles were sold worldwide in 2016. With a sales growth rate of 25%, the global sales of EVs are projected to reach 8.8 million in 2020 and 19 million in 2025.


EVs can be largely divided into HEV, PHEV, and BEV. More specifically, they can be divided into seven subcategories from vehicles with the stop-start function to pure electric vehicles according to electric energy usage.  Recently, low voltage system (LVS) such as 12V and 48-volt configuration have been under development to meet fuel economy regulations imposed in many countries, and LVS-based EV models have already been introduced to the market.  LVS is a promising technology for fuel economy improvement at a relatively low cost.  Moreover, because LVS does not require significant modifications in vehicle platform, auto parts manufactures can develop and supply the system to automakers, reducing the developmental burdens and risks accompanied by the adoption of the new technology.      



The EVs equipped with the stop-start function is expected to increase from 29.5% in 2016 to 37% in 2020, and mild hybrid vehicles will account for 7.0% in 2020 and 30% in 2025. If EVs are included, more than half of the new vehicles produced in 2020 will be installed with an auxiliary driving device/function, and the percentage is forecast to increase up to 83.7% b 2025.
