In the first half of 2012, lithium secondary battery shipments totaled 2.39 billion cells. Quarterly shipments amounted to 1.14 billion cells in the first quarter and 1.25 billion cells in the second quarter.
As for shipments of major companies, Samsung SDI ranked first with 22.8%, followed by Japanese company Panasonic with 17.2%, and LG Chemical with 14.6% in the first half of 2012. On the other hand, ATL and Lishen among Chinese big 4 companies are expected to continue qualitative growth, increasing their lithium polymer battery shipments.
As for market share by type, The cylindrical type accounted for the largest percentage of 39.8%, followed by the prismatic type with 38.9%, and the polymer type with 21.3%.
In particular, there is much attention towards the lithium polymer market. Expanding applications of polymer batteries lead to the growth of the market. Smart phone shipments, for instance, which is one of key applications of polymer batteries, increased by 36% and table shipment by 116% in the first half of 2012 in comparison with last year. As it is expected that the share of ultra slim PCs will considerably increase from 2% in 2011 to 13% in the notebook market in 2012, The lithium polymer battery market will continue steady growth.
As for lithium polymer battery shipments by manufacturer, ATL and SDI took first and second places in the first half of 2012. Considering that the adoption of lithium polymer batteries of ATL and Lishen for i-Phone 5 is expected to increase in the second half of 2012, Chinese lithium secondary battery manufacturers and Korean manufacturers such as SDI and LGC are expected to enter fierce competition.
On a country-by-country basis, Korea achieved a 36.8% in the second quarter, representing a 15.7% increase over the previous quarter. China is catching up with Korea by a short head, accounting for 36.4% with 10.1% growth in the second half in comparison with the previous quarter. Japan achieved a 26.8% market share, with a 0.6% in the first quarter over the previous quarter.
