Electrolytes, drawing attention with expansion of LIB application


The secondary battery market is recently widening its area from small IT application to ESS and EV application.  Sony (incorporated with Panasonic) which developed solar cells and pioneered the market is being ousted in the market with the rise of Korean companies, Samsung SDI and LG Chem.  In addition, new Chinese companies such as ATL, BYD, LISHEN, and BAK are increasing their market share, making a stepping-stone of their infinite domestic market and the government support.  This 'Three Kingdom (Korea/China/Japan) Period' in the secondary battery industry is expected to continue for a while.  With the growth of the EV market, Germany and the United States are also showing continuous interest in large-capacity solar cells and material markets (for instance, A123 (USA) and BASF (Germany). 


Electrolytes are composed of solvents, lithium salts, and additives.  Development of electrolytes requires cooperation with li-ion secondary cell manufacturers due to the nature of them. For instance, it takes at least three to four months to develop small IT products.  For xEV electrolytes, at least one year is required for product development and evaluation.  To develop various products to suit customers demands, excellent R&D is required.
Although Japanese and Korean companies are supplying about 70 % of the global electrolyte market, they are facing stiff competition with Chinese companies that have grown rapidly for recent three years. In Korea, electrolyte suppliers such as Panax e-tec could grow with the help of Samsung SDI that has taken up the largest market share in the global LISB market.  In Japan, Mitsubishi Chemical is maintaining its top position in the global market share, diversifying its client portfolio toward medium-large xEV battery manufacturers.
